Plasty of upper and lower eyelids (blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to remove excess skin and fatty deposits in the area of upper and lower eyelids.Blepharoplasty (from Greek Blepharon - eyelid) is a cosmetic procedure to remove excess skin and fatty deposits in the area of upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be performed as a separate procedure and in combination with other cosmetic surgeries. This procedure allows to remove skin bags under eyes, folds and wrinkles around eyes, but not to remove minor mimic wrinkles in infraorbital region, wrinkles in the area of outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet) and on forehead. As these wrinkles appear due to structural changes of skin (loss of elasticity, dehidration) and due to excessive activity of facial muscles, then in this case the best additional solution is to perform laser resurfacing of skin in combination with other methods of removal of wrinkles. Blepharoplasty does not treat droopy sinking eyebrows.

Why blepharoplasty? Eyes are the aesthetic center of a face, so eyelid surgery is performed both to improve the appearance in general and to eliminate the signs of aging in this area. Blepharoplasty can be often combined with the circular facial plastic surgery, laser resurfacing, and other procedures.

Which signs of aging are treated by blepharoplasty? Excess skin and fat tissue in the area of upper eyelids (sinking skin folds) and lower eyelids (bags under eyes).

What can be achieved by blepharoplasty? Eyes play the core role in human communication and are the area people pay most attention to. And it is not coincidence that the most decorative cosmetics sold in the world is designed for treating eyelids. However, in many cases aesthetic defects of this area can be eliminated by surgical procedure only. You can consult a surgeon and receive all the information about possibilities of blapharoplasty in this or that case. Aesthetic effect is often very obvious, but it is always necessary to remember that as for any cosmetic surgery only improvement of existing condition is possible. And you shouldn’t’ expect absolute excellence.

Do you need to stay in a clinic? Blepharoplasty is usually performed in conditions of daytime inpatient department or with hospitalization for 1 day. Local anaesthesia or intravenous narcosis is applied.

There are many techniques of aesthetic blepharoplasty. What are steps of the procedures? There are many techniques of aesthetic blepharoplasty. Surgical steps can vary in different conditions and depend on the existing conditions, evidence of aging signs, excess skin and fatty tissue, and surgeon’s decision. Classic techniques of blepharoplasty anticipate making incisions of the skin of upper and lower eyelids, along natural folds, and removing excess skin and fatty hernia. The incisions are sewn with a cosmetic suture. A new technique of lower eyelids plastic surgery, so called transconjunctival blepharoplasty, has appeared with development of laser cosmetology equipment. This procedure allows performing an operation without external incisions and without suturing. In case of significant excess skin in the area of lower eyelids together with blepharoplasty the laser resurfacing of the skin of the infraorbital area is performed thus allowing to remove not only excess skin but epidermal wrinkles, pigmentation abnormalities, and to achieve rejuvenation of this area’s skin as well.

Does the surgery leave any scars? Scars are unavoidable results of skin incisions and their subsequent healing. However, the scars leaved after blepharoplasty are located in the natural folds and are almost invisible. The suture of the upper eyelid is located in so called palpebral fold and is not visible when the eyes are open; the suture of the lower eyelid is also masked by natural anatomic formations of this area. Moreover, sometimes later after the surgery the scars are getting pale and can almost disappear. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty leaves no scars.

What can you expect after the procedure? After blepharoplasty your face gets a younger, energetic and rested shape and form. Your look gets more speaking and attractive look. At the same time, to remove sinking eyebrows, wrinkles on forehead and in temporal region other surgeries, such as facial surgery, forehead-lift, laser resurfacing, injection methods of wrinkles correction, are performed. Absolute symmetry is not guaranteed as the face has natural asymmetry.

Which complications can happen after blepharoplasty? During 2-3 weeks after the procedure tissue edema can be visible. Bruises usually disappear in 3-5 days after the surgery. Temporary blear-eyedness, vision abnormalities and eyelashes falling are very rare and usually disappear in 3-4 weeks after the operation. To avoid complications you should strictly follow recommendations of your surgeon.

How long is postsurgical period? The sutures are removed on 4th-5th day after the procedure; during several days protective stitching tapes are applied to the line of sutures. Majority of patients may resume their work 7-10 days after the operation. Following the same period patients may use decorative hypoallergic cosmetics. Sunglasses will perfectly protect you not only against UV-rays but against strange looks, so it is recommended to wear sunglasses 1-2 weeks after the operation. If transconjunctival blepharoplasty was performed in combination with laser resurfacing sunscreen creams should be used.
