Lipoaspiration

Liposuction is an aesthetic (cosmetic) surgical procedure to remove localized fatty deposits on hips, buttocks, stomach, hands, neck, and in the chin region.Liposuction (from Greek lipos – fat and English suction - suction) is an aesthetic (cosmetic) surgical procedure to remove localized fatty deposits on hips, buttocks, stomach, hands, neck, and in the chin region. Sometimes, liposuction is performed to remove fat at other places. This technique appeared around 20 years ago in France and widely spread in the world under various names (liposuction, vacuum lipectomy etc.). Today liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries.

When is the time for liposuction? Liposuction permits to reduce or remove local fatty deposits, and may be performed to improve contour and appearance of the entire body. This surgery is not aimed at treating fatness or body weight reduction.

Does liposuction remove cellulite? Liposuction is not designed for cellulite removal, however a certain improvement due to reduction of fatty deposits layer may be observed after the surgery.

Which results can be achieved through liposuction? Liposuction may have transforming effect; however to accurately forecast results you should consult a plastic surgeon. Sometimes the best results may be achieved having combined liposuction and surgical lipectomy (removal of skin-fat flaps), in other case there are no indications to undergo liposuction. A patient’s task during the consultancy is to clearly set forth his/her desires and targets, and, basing on a surgeon’s recommendations, to make a well-grounded decision. A patient should always remember that the real result is improvement but not absolute perfection.

Liposuction may be performed both under local and general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. How is liposuction performed? Liposuction may be performed both under local and general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. A special tube is used to perform vacuum removal of fatty deposits through minor (0.3-0.4 cm) skin incisions. Fat is mainly removed from anterior and lateral surfaces of stomach, buttocks, inner and outer sides of thighs, knees, shoulders, chin, and neck. After surgery a patient should wear for some time special elastic underwear to reduce edema and to ensure correct skin contraction.

How long is the period of hospitalization? It depends on the extent of the surgery and general health status. Usual hospitalization period is one to three days.

Does this procedure cause any side effects? Edema and bruises at the operated site may remain for several weeks after the surgery. Infection processes and excessive scarring are rarely observed. Rough or tuberous skin may be connected with insufficient elasticity of the skin, although the skin is contracting during the postsurgical period and the skin surface gets smoother.

Which results can be expected? Liposuction is ideal for patients with local fatty deposits for which the diet and physical exercises don’t work. This surgery does not anticipate reduction of the general weight of the body. Usually, the skin covering the treatment areas contracts after the surgery, however in some cases if there is significant excess skin its removal may be required.

Does the surgery leave scars? Since skin incisions are very small (about 3-4 mm) the scars are almost invisible.

How stable is the result of this procedure? Fat tissue removed during the surgery usually does not develop again at the treatment area. If the general weight of the body does not increase after the surgery then the effect of liposuction remains constant. If the diet is not followed then fat tissue may accumulate in the adjacent zones.

When can I return to usual pace of life? It is an individual question. Most patients may resume their routine social activity within a week after the surgery. Very often this period may be even shorter. In some case it increases depending on the extent of the surgery, age, health condition, and other factors.

Liposuction is ideal for patients with local fatty deposits for which the diet and physical exercises don’t work.
