Nasal plasty (rhinoplasty)

Nasal plasty or rhinoplasty (from Greek Rhinos - nose) is possibly the oldest plastic surgery. Restorative rhinoplasty is known to be performed about 2600 years ago. At the same time nasal plasty for cosmetic indications is performed only a little more than during a century. Aesthetic rhinoplasty is a surgery performed to reshape or resize external nose and to improve the appearance. This surgery can also be performed to remove birth defects, nose deformations caused by traumas, and to improve breathing through nose (nasal functional surgery).

What are indications for rhinoplasty? Indication for rhiniplasty is someone’s desire to improve his/her appearance and to restore harmonic proportionality of the face.

How strong can be changes of the appearance? Nose is one of the most important structures forming the general harmony of the face. That is why nose deformations often cause moral suffering of the patients. On the other hand, reshaping and resizing of the nose can completely transform the face. It is no coincidence that the nose surgery is called as “surgery of millimetres”, and each surgical procedure requires thorough individual planning.

Which results can be achieved? One of the main tasks is to create a new harmonic appearance having retained individual face features. Rhinoplasty can surely change the face significantly, but is necessary to remember that the nose does not exists separately from the other face features, and it seems that the short upturned nose will not match the face with heavy long features. Minor and at the first glance unobvious changes conferring natural harmony to the face are the top result of the aesthetic rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty procedural steps. The technique of the surgery depends on the tasks facing a surgeon and conditions available. There are two techniques of this surgery: with external incision across the columella (open rhinoplasty), and with only hidden internal incisions (closed procedure). Both techniques permit to receive good results. The surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.

What is the purpose of the surgery? The surgery is performed to correct bone and chondral structures which form nose frame. The surgery lasts for 1-2 hours. During several days following the surgery retentive bandages and intranasal tampons are usually applied.

Do you need to stay in a clinic? Usual period of stay at the inpatient department for this type of surgery is 1-2 days. Sometimes the surgery can be performed in conditions of day hospital.

Does the surgery leave any scars? In case of “closed” technique of the surgery there is one small incisions in each nostril which cannot be seen from outside and, sometime later, are hardly visible even during medical examination. Open rhinoplasty leaves a scar on each part of nasal septum; such scar is usually negligible. Sometimes additional incisions are made under nostrils. Scars after such incisions are usually almost negligible.

Which side effects and complications can happen after the surgery? First days usually shows nose edema both visible (outside the nose) and hidden (inside) which can be diagnosed through nasal congestion. Bruises under eyes can be visible up to 10-12 days. Small swelling of outer nose tissues can stay up to 5-6 months but are usually not visible for people. Processes of tissue formation and transformation usually last up to 9-12 months following rhinoplasty. It is assumed that the surgery final result cannot be assessed prior to this term. Such complications as infection, abnormal healing or major blooding are very rare.

When you may resume usual work and what you need to do after the surgery? The period for resuming the normal level of social activity depends on the individual peculiarities and scope of the surgery performed. You’d better discuss the issue of such period during consultancy with a surgeon. Major part of patients can resume their work 4-5 days after the surgery. However, during the first months there can be some limitations of the nutrition diet and some types of activity. During 5-8 weeks after the surgery it is not recommended to wear heavy-rimmed glasses.

Are psychological factors important for rhinoplasty? As in case of any other plastic surgery emotional stability is the most important factors in presurgical selection. A new nose does not mean automatic beginning of the new life and solution of all problems. But, if your goal is to eliminate or correct really existing defects, to make the face harmonically balanced and proportional then rhinoplasty may help you look better, feel better, and, consequently, socially function better.
